About Us

Hug-a-Root Family Farms is an organization of people who are committed to making a meaningful impact on the quality of food that we eat. We are currently focused on the planning and installation of fruit and vegetable gardens and green spaces in and around Abilene, TX, which is located approximately 180 miles west of Dallas, TX. We believe it is our responsibility to partner together with like-minded individuals and organizations to build a local food community.

Hug-A-Root Family Farms was started by Josh and Pam Casey to promote healthy, local food in the big country.Hug-a-Root was founded in 2011 by Josh and Pam Casey. Both morbidly obese at the time, with Josh facing a diabetic future, Pam besieged by gastrointestinal issues, and the kids struggling with weight issues, it became evident something had to change nutritionally. The lack of good, clean food available to the family presented a unique challenge, one faced by a large portion of today’s society. And so the journey began. Vegetable gardens were planted, chicken coops built, farmers markets visited, and many new friends were made.

By the summer of 2012, Hug-a-Root had three active gardens and the donation of a third of an acre for our first complete “Community Garden” on the north side of Abilene. The Casey family was dropping weight in huge amounts by eating much less fast food or boxed and processed foods, and moved toward incorporating home-cooked meals, smaller portions, more natural fats, and other healthier practices into their daily lives.

In August of 2012, Hug-a-Root was formally approved as an organizational extension of MissionAbilene.  Today, we are an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.  Since day one, dependable volunteers have been showing up to help us and have been absolutely critical to the early success of this endeavor.

Workers at Mary BowdenIn 2014, we began dreaming and laying plans for a multiple acre farm in Buffalo Gap. Caton Place, owned by James Caton and operated by Hug-A-Root, is now the primary source of produce for our home delivery program.

We are steadily crossing paths with like-minded individuals in the community.  The future looks bright with this ever-widening group of people that share a vision for the future. A future that is cleaner, healthier and more unified.
